How Does Gambling Affect Your Life?

Gamblers around the world have been playing games of chance for hundreds of years. Gambling has been considered a form of sport but the two games are actually quite different. Gambling as we know it today is merely a form of gambling with an uncertain outcome and the goal being to win something more than your initial stake.

To play any game of chance you must take some risks. Gambling therefore requires three components to be present: risk, consideration, and a reward. If these components are present and proper precautions are taken then there is no reason why gamblers can’t win a considerable amount of money while still taking only small risks.

The first thing that most people think of when they hear of gamblers being diagnosed with gambling problems is usually depression, or some other psychological disorder. While many things can cause gamblers to lose their temper or become depressed there are some very specific pathological gambling disorders that can only be treated by professional gambling treatment centers. These include: a compulsion to gamble, a personality disorder, an addiction to gambling, or a situational response. If you are suffering from one of these then you are likely not suffering from a true pathological gambling problem. You may however have some other more moderate personality disorders which will nevertheless allow you to lose a substantial amount of money without harming yourself or others.

For example a person with a personality disorder will be unable to lose money on purpose. It may be that the gambler makes risky bets just because he wants to have a reaction. He thinks that if he loses the bet then he will feel bad. This is a true addiction, but this type of gambling is perfectly legal in the United States as long as a lot of people participating are over the age of 21. This is different from most European countries where gambling is against the law and punishable with a large number of years in prison.

The real problem of illegal gambling wasn’t until the 20th century when the first syndicates and organized crime organizations took root in the US. Gambling was also used for political reasons during the election process in the United States. It was an excuse for many prominent Americans to support a candidate for president by wagering large amounts of money. This started the spread of organized crime and the rise in prison sentences for criminal syndicates, kickbacks, and corrupt public officials which led to the current state we find ourselves in today.
